Automated Weather Observation Station @ NRRA

Description: The automated weather observation station (AWOS) is a collection of weather instruments that automatically collects, records, and transmits weather to pilots, the general public, the FAA, and the National Weather Service.

The AWOS assesses the weather approximately once every minute. Measured parameters include: Temperature, dewpoint, cloud height, visibility, precipitation data, wind speed and direction, and altimeter setting (barometric pressure).

The information is transmitted on an aviation frequency of 120.0 MHz. Pilots within 25 - 50 miles of NRRA can obtain real time weather information while inbound for landing. The general public can also access the real-time weather by calling 246-3202. The AWOS also transmits the weather data via satellite uplink to the FAA and NWS every minute. The NWS then distributes the info to TV and radio stations, third party vendors, internet providers, etc. A computer monitor also displays the current weather conditions. The monitor is located in the pilot lounge.

Purpose: The AWOS is part of a weather network throughout Wisconsin and the US. Approximately 40 other units are installed at airports in Wisconsin along with about 70 in Minnesota. The real-time weather is an important safety feature for general aviation pilots and especially business aviation pilots.

Location: The AWOS structure is located near the NDB transmitter in a field on the eastern portion of the airport.

Cost: The AWOS was installed in June of 2000 and fully commissioned in October of 2000. The AWOS was part of a joint State/City project with a total cost of $100,000. Included in the cost is a five year service agreement for parts and maintenance.
