Non-directional Beacon (NDB) @ NRRA

Description: The non-directional beacon (NDB) is a 25 watt AM radio transmitter. The NDB transmits a signal on a frequency of 257 KHz. The NDB consists of a transmitter, antenna coupler, and antenna. The antenna is stretched between two 50’ utility poles placed 400’ apart. Several underground antenna radials are also in place.

Purpose: The NDB is used by pilots for navigation when the weather does not permit visual approaches. Typically, if the clouds are less than 1000’ above the ground and/or the visibility is less than 3 to 5 miles, an instrument approach is required to land.

Location: The NDB is housed in an 8’ x 8’ orange and white building located in a field on the eastern portion of the airport.

Cost: The NDB transmitter and antenna coupler were purchased in 2000 at an approximate cost of $15,000.
