NOW THAT HAD TO HURT
There's nothing like a report of a twin-engine airplane sitting in the middle of Wisconsin Highway 64 a few miles east of the airport to perk up your day. Yesterday at about 12:50 PM, a 1950's vintage Twin Bonanza B-50 made a forced landing on STH 64 near the intersection of 170th Street, which is approximately 3.2 nautical miles east of NRMA. The old twin apparently suffered a case of fuel starvation in both engines due to mechanical reasons. The two people on board were uninjured. The airplane suffered relatively minor damage - a banged up left wing leading edge from a close encounter with a traffic sign, and a few dents around the nose from a utility line. STH 64 was closed for more than an hour as the aircraft was towed to the south aircraft parking apron at NRMA with dozens of on-lookers lining the parade route. The twin was headed to NRMA from Eau Claire. The FAA is investigating the incident. The New Richmond News has a picture of the twin available at http://www.rivertowns.net/daily/nrn/c020320/w-plane-big.jpg

THE SCORE IS: AIRPORT SECURITY 1, FULL SIZE PICK-UP TRUCK ZERO
NRMA security was put to a real-life test a few weeks ago. A full size 1992 pick-up truck operated by an unknown individual was apparently traveling at a high rate of speed westbound on 200th Ave. from STH 65 on the northeast side of the airport. The driver apparently didn't realize 200th Ave. was turned into a dead-end street when runway 14-32 was constructed back in 1992. A highway guardrail was placed at the end of the road to prevent vehicles from crossing the runway. The guardrail did its job. The truck impacted the guardrail at an estimated speed of 45 - 65 miles per hour. No skid marks were observed. The guardrail ended up being destroyed. The truck fled the scene, but left behind a nice trail of oil and plenty of evidence. The New Richmond Police Department Crime Lab investigated the hit and run and recently reported they have a suspect.

SAFETY SEMINAR
It's official. Tuesday, April 30th is the date for the next FAA Aviation Safety Seminar in New Richmond. The event is being held at the New Richmond Senior High School Theatre from 7 until 10 PM. For more info, go to http://www.nrairport.com . We had around 100 area pilots attend the three-hour event last May. This year, I'm hoping for 150 participants. Local hangar construction companies will have info on-hand and there will be a bunch of door prizes, too.

AIRPORT COMMISSION MEETING AND COOKOUT
The next meeting of the Airport Commission is scheduled for Wednesday, March 27th at 6:30 PM. The meeting will be held in hangar 6-1 at the airport. A cookout is planned for immediately after the meeting. Everyone is invited. Food and beverages will be provided.

HANGAR SPACE
I receive several calls each week from individuals interested in renting a hangar space at NRMA. If any hangar owners have an empty space available, please let me know ASAP - I will pass the info along. Also...hangar construction is continuing in the north hangar area at NRMA. Ten hangars are now fully completed and four more are under construction. Construction of at least ten more hangars is still planned for this year. If you are interested in constructing a hangar at NRMA, check our hangar construction page at http://www.nrairport.com/new%20hangars.htm . Watch for an upcoming newspaper article regarding the new hangar construction and the economic impact of the airport in the New Richmond News.

GA FLIGHTS TO CANADA
CANPASS (Canadian Customs) Private and Corporate Air Programs are to resume April 2nd at designated airports across Canada. The program was put on hold following the events of September 11th.
