INMATES AT WORK
Inmates from the St. Croix Correctional Center in New Richmond performed approximately 220 hours of community service work last week at the airport. Brush was cleared around the windsock area and around the sea-plane ramp. Seven dump truck loads of brush were hauled away. Blue, reflective taxiway markers were constructed and installed along the new taxiway on the southwest side of the airport. Rainy weather hindered the painting of the taxiway stripes and runway distance markers. The inmates will be stopping back to finish up the work in July prior to the Citabria Owners Group fly-in.
DISASTER DRILL
Early this year, the City of New Richmond Emergency Government Committee applied to FEMA for funding of an airport disaster drill. FEMA came through and awarded us a grant of about $3500. The disaster scenario will involve a taxiing twin engine aircraft colliding with the fuel pumps and causing a major fuel spill. Rescuers will have to contain the fuel spill, rescue burn victims from the aircraft, and then triage, treat and transport the patients to the hospital. The grant requires the City to follow a 3-part process. Part 1, held last March, was a table-top discussion of the simulated disaster. Part 2, planned for June 22nd, is a stepped up version of part 1 - a dress rehearsal of sorts. Part 3, planned for July, is a full-blown exercise involving nearly every city department.
AEROSPACE CLASS TAKES FLIGHT
23 kids from the East Elementary School Aerospace Class took to the air on Tuesday, June 8th. Each child received a 20-minute ride in a Cessna 172 around the New Richmond Metropolitan area. One of the projects for the class was to place an egg in a milk carton and drop it from the airplane from an altitude of about 300 feet. The kids had to determine the appropriate packing material to keep the egg from breaking. The results: 18 unbroken eggs and 5 broken eggs. For approximately 3/4 of the children it was their first plane ride ever.
JUST IN CASE YOU WERE WONDERING...
The big pile of gravel and mud near the windsock is the result of a minor incident that occurred last Friday. We were hauling gravel to the windsock area using the dump truck. The first load went just fine. The second load didn't quite make it there, however. I stopped the truck to speak to the Sergeant in charge of the inmate crew. When I returned about 1 minute later, the truck was buried up to the axles in mud. 10 inmates and 1 John Deere tractor were able to free the truck about 2 hours later.
ROTARY MEETING
The airport was the featured topic at the New Richmond Rotary meeting yesterday at Suzanna's Restaurant. Jean Needham, President at Holy Family Hospital, invited me to speak to about 40 business leaders in the community.
JUST A REMINDER
Fuel prices at NRMA are still only $1.64 for 100LL and $1.29 for Jet A!
