FUEL PRICES!
The cost of flying went down on Tuesday. Jay Griggs, owner of Griggs Aviation at NRMA, lowered the price on a gallon of avgas $.25 and a gallon of jet fuel $.10. The new prices are $1.94 per gallon for 100 Low Lead and $1.69 for Jet A with additive. Self-service fuel is available 24 hrs/day with a major credit card.
NORTH APRON
Work started today on a new 180' x 200' aircraft parking apron on the north end of the airport. Dressel Construction - the same company that completed last year's taxiway and hangar area construction project - is back with several pieces of heavy equipment to complete the new apron and touch-up a few areas left over from the original project. A new airport business entered into a lease agreement for a parcel on the west side of the apron. Construction of their building will be announced in the next few months. The apron should be fully completed within the next several days.
CLASS B AIRSPACE
In case you have not heard - the airspace surrounding Minneapolis/St. Paul is once again open for VFR flight. The FAA issued a notice to airman over the weekend stating the MSP airspace would open at 7 am on Tuesday morning. It opened, but it might not stay that way. Make sure you check with a Flight Service Station to obtain the latest notices prior to flying within 20 miles of MSP.
AOPA AIRPORT SUPPORT NETWORK
NRMA has its first AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association) Airport Support Network volunteer. Jon Cumpton (jcbroke40@aol.com), owner of hangar number 11-2, was appointed to a 1-year term last month. Airport Support Network volunteers typically assist in the promotion and development of the airport as well as act as a relay of information between the local airport and AOPA headquarters on the east coast. SECURITY
Airport security was increased in response to the events of September 11th. Random day and night patrols by airport personnel of both hangar areas and the perimeter of the airport were started, new security lights were installed in the north hangar area, and a new remote digital security camera was purchased. A gate leading to the automated weather equipment and the non-directional beacon navigational aid was also secured. Random police patrols were also increased over the past few weeks. Just a reminder...keep your hangar locked when it is unattended, don't leave your keys in your airplane when it is parked outside, and be observant. Watch for anything out of the ordinary - unfamiliar people loitering on the aircraft parking apron or hangar areas, unusual aircraft modifications, etc. To report any unusual activity, contact the St. Croix County Emergency Communications Center at 715-246-6131. I will also be attending the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics Airport Management Seminar in early November. Two sessions on security at general aviation airports are planned.
PROP BALANCING
A representative from AB Flight Services informed me they are having someone come by their shop to balance several props on multiple aircraft within the next few weeks. The technician is booked for one complete day balancing AB's aircraft, but they asked me to spread the word and see if anyone else is interested in having their propeller balanced. If enough people are interested, we should be able to get the technician to stop back and swing us a good price. Send me an e-mail if you are interested in prop balancing. I will coordinate the times and date. mike@nrairport.com
AIRPORT COMMISSION MEETING
The Airport Commission approved the 2002 budget at a meeting held on October 2nd. Several items included in the next budget are funding for an airport maintenance building, new fencing, additional security equipment, and a new dock for the seaplane base. The budget is not finalized, however. The City Council and the Finance Committee of the City Council still need to approve the budget in November.
Don't forget, the common traffic advisory frequency at NRMA is now 122.975 and the AWOS frequency is 120.0.
