NEW FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS NEARBY
The FAA issued a notice to airmen yesterday restricting flight around 86 nuclear facilities around the country, including Prairie Island near Red Wing, Minnesota and Monticello on the northwest side of Minneapolis. The flight restriction prohibits any type of flight from the surface up to 18,000 feet for a radius of 10 nautical miles. Red Wing Municipal Airport is basically shut down through at least November 6th due to the proximity to Prairie Island. Check the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association website for the latest updates. http:\\www.aopa.org

NEW HANGARS
Hangar construction appears to be unaffected following the events of 9-11. I received at least one call per day over the past few weeks from individuals interested in building a hangar at NRMA. An updated layout of the north hangar area is now available at http://www.nrairport.com/new%20hangars.htm Twenty-one new leases for hangar construction have been issued in the last twelve months and at least six more are in the works. A "frequently asked questions" page regarding hangar construction was added to nrairport.com last week. There is a link to the page from the hangar construction page. If you are interested in building a hangar, contact me at 715-246-7735 or by e-mail at mike@nrairport.com.

KIWANIS MEETING
I spoke on the role of NRMA in our community at the local Kiwanis Club meeting held Monday at Suzanna's Restaurant in New Richmond. The community business leaders present at the meeting were extremely supportive and complimentary towards NRMA. Several individuals commented they understood the increased importance in general aviation air travel and the charter industry following the events of 9/11. While I was doing research for the presentation, I learned the idea for an airport in New Richmond actually started at a Kiwanis Club meeting 40 years ago. Thomas Jordon, Director of the State Aeronautics Committee at the time, was invited to speak at the Kiwanis Club meeting in September 1961. That meeting appeared to be the spark that started the airport process. By early 1962, plans were already drawn and funding was approved.

PLANNING COMMISSION
A small residential housing development is planned for an area approximately 1.25 miles south of NRMA. The development will be located north of North Shore Drive and east of Johnson Drive in the City of New Richmond. The area lies under the approach path for landings conducted on runway 32 at NRMA. NRMA will be represented at the Planning Commission meeting where the preliminary plat for the development will be presented. Future homeowners in the proposed development will be required to meet an airport friendly building code. NRMA will also require a notice to be placed on the plat indicating the presence of the airport, the proximity of the airport to the proposed development, and the future homeowners will agree not to complain about the airport. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 6th at 5:30 PM at the Civic Center in New Richmond.

NEW TAXIWAY
City of New Richmond personnel are in the process of extending the parallel taxiway to runway 4-22 by approximately 120'. The taxiway was needed to accommodate an addition to the Baumann Floats facility, located in row 10 in the south hangar area.

APRON COMPLETED
The expansion of the north hangar area apron is now complete. The apron was paved last week and erosion control and seeding of the area was finished on Monday. The apron was expanded to accommodate a new fixed base operation planned for the spring.

AIRPORT OPS SEMINAR
I will be attending the annual Airport Operations and Management Seminar sponsored by the Wisconsin Bureau of Aeronautics. The seminar will be held in Wisconsin Rapids on Thursday and Friday, November 8th and 9th. A main focus of this year's seminar is airport security.

FUEL PRICES @ NRMA
100 Low Lead is $1.94 per gallon and Jet A is $1.69 per gallon. A special thanks to Jay Griggs of Griggs Aviation for keeping the fuel prices low.

Don't forget, the common traffic advisory frequency at NRMA is now 122.975 and the AWOS frequency is 120.0.
