aircraft mishap - july 17th
On Thursday, July 17th, 2025 at approximately 7:02 AM, a single engine RV-6 experimental aircraft overran the end of the runway while attempting to land on runway 22 at New Richmond Regional Airport. The aircraft exited the runway, traveled down an embankment, and ended up inverted in approximately five feet of water near the shore of Hatfield Lake. The Minnesota based pilot, the only occupant of the two-seat aircraft, was able to self extricate from the submerging aircraft, walk to a nearby airport based business, and report the accident. New Richmond EMS evaluated the pilot on scene and treated minor injuries.
The aircraft was reported to have less than ten gallons of fuel and oil on board. A small fuel and oil leak was contained by personnel from New Richmond Fire and Rescue.
Weather reports at the time of the accident showed calm winds, clear skies, and unlimited visibility.
New Richmond Regional Airport personnel along with New Richmond Police Department and St. Croix County Sheriff’s Department assisted with the accident scene management and aircraft recovery. The FAA and NTSB were notified of the accident and are investigating. Runway 4/22 was closed for three hours and normal airport operations were not impacted.
New Richmond Regional Airport is home to 274 based aircraft in 121 privately owned hangars making it the largest airport in Wisconsin. The airport has two runways. The primary runway 14/32 is 5,507 feet long and constructed of asphalt. The secondary runway 4/22 is 2000 feet long and is made of turf.
